ip Hop with a cause. That’s what many people are saying about the album King Kulture. The compilation album, put together by Rapzilla.com, has a number of Christian Hip Hop’s best come together to raise money for Ecole de la Borne, a school in the Congo where the literacy rate is 66 percent (versus 99 percent in the United States).
Featuring tracks with K-Drama, KJ-52, Braille, Theory Hazit and Lecrae, King Kulture is sure to have a little something for everyone. The project, which took two years to complete, features all new music and has many high points!
“Lift Up” is a banging track featuring Braille. The Theory Hazit produced track sees Braille go hard as he talks about pushing through adversity and uplifting others. “I won’t forfeit I push forward, ” he rhymes on the hook. “When I uplift it’s only for his glory,” he continues. I love everything about this track from the production to the beat and rhymes!
“Get Wise” features former Reach Records artist Sho Baraka. The track is a call to all those who ask for change, to stand up and make something happen. “I’m sitting in this class, all the students want to argue about change but ain’t nobody doing it. I’m sitting in this church the preacher man is teaching about new life but ain’t nobody living it,” Sho rhymes on the hook. This is usually the kind of track I would skip but I must admit I found myself loving it. The hook on the song draws you in.
“Don’t Leave the Dash Out” features K-Drama. This track is a reminder to those going through tough times to continue to trust God. K-Drama provides another catchy hook: “Don’ leave the dash out, It’s easy to look over when the cash is out. Trust God in the process and don’t lash out, cause he’ll hash it out!” The song has a great beat and nice rhymes. This is a feel good song.
The first time I heard the song “King Kulture,” my favorite track on the project, I thought I was listening to a Dr. Dre track. The beat will make you nod your head and the singing on the hook is excellent. Both Braille and Theory Hazit really bring their A game on their verses. This was the first track I heard off the project and really is what attracted me to the album as a whole!
Overall, King Kulture is a solid project. My one con for the album is that it seems to have some ‘filler’ songs. Songs like “Stop” and “Bars” sort of felt out of place to me. Also I would have liked the album intro to be a little stronger. It’s hard for me to view an album as ‘great’ if the beginning is not on point. What I like most about the project is that the best tracks are really good! Excellent production is evident throughout the project. King Kulture is a good project that with a few changes could have been great! Nevertheless, it’s a project that every Christian Hip Hop fan should check out!
